Episode Details: (Bringing Peace to the Niger Delta ) The situation in the Niger Delta continues to be dire. Oil bunkering, rebel militias, kidnapping, inter-ethnic strife, widespread corruption, ineffective use of oil income, underdevelopment, and anger at oil companies all contribute to feelings of hopelessness on the part of the Niger Delta population. While the Nigerian Federal Government has promised to produce new proposals for a way forward, nothing of real substance has yet been developed. To generate ideas about ways forward toward greater peace and prosperity in the Delta, the U.S. Institute of Peace, the Council on Foreign Relations, the Center for Strategic and International Studies, and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars hosted this workshop on the current situation in the Niger Delta. | |
